Our beloved Princess Grace

Tragedy struck in 1982, when Princess Grace of Monaco suffered a stroke driving home to Monaco. Losing control of the car, she drove off a steep mountain, plummeting 100 feet down a ravine. She tragically died from a brain hemorrhage, a "cerebral vascular incident" the next day on Sept. 14 at age 52.

A brain haemorrhage is a type of stroke that is caused by bleeding in or around the brain, typically from a blood vessel.

Hemorrhagic strokes make about 15% of all strokes, and are rather occuring in younger patients. There are two types, and both can cause long-term damage to the brain:

  • Bleeding within the brain: called an intracerebral haemorrhage, or intracranial haemorrhage (ICH).
  • Bleeding on the surface of the brain: called a subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH).
